Next to the 5 string Banjo we have the 4 string version and the Guitar Banjo. A Guitar Banjo is a Banjo with 6 strings, and it is tuned as a guitar. The sound reminds you somewhat of a Banjo. Because of its tuning, guitarists feel it is a good introduction to Banjo playing.
During your first lesson I will make you aware of which instrument is best for your needs. In general I advise students a 5 string Banjo since it is the most common model and the tuning is not too hard to get used to. The instrument will also give you access to most of the popular Banjo music you may listen to.
Once we have made a start with the lessons we will learn about the names of the parts of the Banjo, we will learn how to use our fingers and play some simple rolls. For guitarists among you, a roll is a picking pattern.
We will also make a start with playing some simple chords and chord sequences, pretty soon you will feel like you are making music.
During the lessons I will make use of various other instruments like the guitar and the bass, to give you the feeling you are making music together with other instruments.
Students who do have some playing experience can express their needs. Together we design a programme which will fit your individual learning style.
The lessons will be very hands on in nature. There will be time for some practical music theory to support your music making. We will learn about the musical alphabet and what it means for the names of the open strings and the note names on the fret board of the Banjo.
After your fist lesson you will experience that playing the Banjo can be a very relaxing and rewarding experience at the same time.
