Organ
My musical journey started with the organ. The organ, whilst being compact, is a orchestra in its own right: Whatever you play it will sound huge. Try this with a guitar...
The organ introduced me to reading music, simple music theory and being able to play with all ten fingers and your feet. All in all it was a good basis for a young and enthusiastic musician.
Mouth organ
The next instrument I tried was the mouth organ. It is a simple and very pleasing instrument which can be carried around with you where ever you go.
Somehow I felt the mouth organ was lacking a little of what the organ could give me.
Acoustic guitar
Combine the mouth organ with a acoustic guitar and all of a sudden the sound becomes more powerful. All I needed to do was learn to play chords on the guitar and being able to create good rhythms for the backing of the mouth organ.
Electric guitar.
Once introduced to the acoustic guitar many people will become curious in the electric guitar. Me too!! The electric guitar does need a amplifier for the guitar to be heard. The sound of the guitar can be changed by effect pedals. All things I was interested in and wanted to try.
As soon as I started to play with guitar effects I realised you could approach the guitar from many different angels: You can play with the notes, try to be as precise with them as you can or you can play with sound, let the effects decide where your notes go to make the music you want to play.
England
In the 1990s I decided to go to England to concentrate on the study- and making of music full time.It was during this period I started with the teaching of the guitar. My first students where friends and other people I knew, who wanted to improve their guitar skills. Very soon I was teaching the guitar for the wider public. Among my students were children, teenagers, young people, people of middle age and retired pensioners who felt they had time for a new hobby.
Apart from teaching I kept myself busy playing with bands and other musicians. I played mainly guitar and electric piano but later on it was also electric bass.
Learning to play a different musical instrument becomes easier once you have a good basis at one instrument. It is just a matter of discipline and time.
As a musician I find it pleasing to combine different styles to surprise the listener with fresh sounds and ideas. Music for me is a journey, a journey full of enthusiasm and improvisation.
The musical journey can be made with just one guitar, or you could combine the guitar with bass, drums and loop pedals to create a larger musical ensemble.
